What You Didn't Know About Valentine's Day

Untitled #91

Good morning, lovebirds! Happy Heart Day, Valentine's Day, Single Awareness Day-- whatever you want to call it, its February 14th! Every year, couples, friends and family send goodies & appreciation to their loved ones. But does anyone know why? Maybe you know of this guy named St. Valentine and he obviously did something cool to get an entire holiday named after him, but maybe that's where your gates of knowledge close. Well, today I'm going to tell you why.

Quick story time:
During the third century in Rome, Emperor Claudius II believed that single men made better soldiers than those with a family. A Christian Saint named Valentinus thought this ridiculous, and continued to perform weddings for soldiers in secret. Valentinus also ministered to Christians, who were often tortured in Roman prisons. Because of these two faults, Valentinus was imprisoned himself. There he fell in love with Asterius, the jailer's daughter. Before his death, it is said that Valentinus wrote "from your Valentine" in a farewell letter to her. the end.

Isn't that kind of cool?! Here's a few other little facts you probably didn't know:
+72 million Valentine's day cards were purchased last year. (That's 40% of all cards sold!)
+there's a 40% increase in requests for divorce lawyers in mid-February.
+15% of women sent flowers to themselves last year.
+220,000 wedding proposals on Valentine's Day last year.
+8 billion little SweetHeart candies are made.
+An average American spent $126.03, most of it on jewelry last year for their special someone.
+45% of men think that flowers are a way to say "i love you"-- 4% of women do.

Why did giving chocolate become associated with Valentines Day?
In the 19th century, physicians prescribed chocolate to their patients with broken hearts. Then in the late 19th century, Richard Cadbury launched the first heart-shaped box of chocolates, made specifically for Valentine's Day. Thaaank yooou Mr. Cadbury.
